About the piece: The Pink Triangle is one of the most recognizable symbols for the LGBTQ community. Originally one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, it was used to distinguish and shame those imprisoned because they had been identified by authorities as homosexual men, bisexual men and transgender women. Being homosexual during the holocaust was considered a greater crime than being an assassin or a thief, and the consequent treatment was infrahuman, to say the least. These stories, experiences and hardships are exposed in books like Heinz Heger’s The Men with the Pink Triangle. In the 1970s, the Pink Triangle was reclaimed as a positive symbol of self-identity, protest against homophobia, and has since been adopted by the larger LGBTQ community as a popular symbol of LGBTQ pride and the LGBTQ rights movement. Pink was written for Inversion Ensemble as a part of the program for their concert Stigma: Songs of the Forgotten.
